Barbie Coloring Tips

Ready to bring Barbie’s world to life? These quick tips make every page easier to finish and more fun to look at once it’s done.

  1. Start with the Main Colors — Color the largest areas first (the dress, the background) so the smaller details don’t get lost while you’re still deciding on a palette.
  2. Give Her Hair Some Life — A single flat color looks stiff on paper. Instead, blend two or three close shades — a light and dark blonde, or brown with a few strands of chestnut — following the direction each strand is drawn. That’s the real trick behind hair that looks like it’s actually moving.
  3. Add Depth with Shadows — A darker version of the same color along the folds of a dress or the underside of hair instantly makes a flat drawing look three-dimensional.
  4. Make Accessories Pop — Bags, shoes, and jewelry stand out best in bright, saturated colors — or with metallic gel pens if you have them.
  5. Don’t Leave the Background Blank — Even a few simple stars, hearts, or flower shapes sketched into empty space turn a plain page into a finished piece.
  6. Try a Textured Pattern — Polka dots, stripes, or a light zigzag on a dress or skirt reads as fabric texture, not just a flat block of color.
  7. Stay Loose About the Lines — Going slightly outside the lines isn’t a mistake to stress over — a darker outline color or a quick fix with an eraser (for pencil) usually solves it.
  8. Mix Your Materials — Colored pencils, markers, and pastels all behave differently on the same page; mixing them (markers for bold areas, pencils for shading) often looks better than sticking to just one.
  9. Make Her Your Own — There’s no rule that says Barbie’s dress has to be pink. Try a completely different palette if that’s what looks best to you.
  10. Turn the Design-Your-Own Dress Page into a Fashion Collage — Use the Design Your Own Barbie Dress page as a simple craft project. After drawing a pattern, add small pieces of colored paper, tissue paper, or fabric scraps to the open dress panels, then give the finished outfit its own name. It turns one coloring page into a hands-on Barbie fashion-design activity.

Who Is Barbie?

Barbie debuted at the New York Toy Fair on March 9, 1959. Mattel co-founder Ruth Handler developed the idea after watching her daughter Barbara play with paper dolls and imagine adult roles. Barbie’s full character name is Barbara Millicent Roberts, and her name was inspired by Barbara. Ken joined the Barbie line in 1961 and was named after Handler’s son, Kenneth.

Barbie has since appeared in far more roles than fashion alone. Mattel says Barbie career dolls have represented more than 250 professions, and that range is reflected in this collection through pages such as Doctor Barbie, Astronaut Barbie, Barbie Fashion Designer, Barbie Chef, Artist Barbie, and Pop Star Barbie.

FAQ

Is Barbie’s signature color pink or purple?

Pink is Barbie’s signature color. Mattel regularly describes pink as Barbie’s iconic or signature color, although purple and many other colors appear throughout her fashions too. For a coloring page, there’s no required palette — you can use whichever colors you like.

How do I create my own Barbie?

For this printable collection, the easiest place to start is the Design Your Own Barbie Dress page. Its dress has large blank panels where you can draw patterns, add fashion details, or create your own color scheme before finishing the rest of the page.

What does a Barbie girl look like?

There is no single official “Barbie girl” look. Barbie Fashionistas dolls have appeared with different body types, skin tones, hair colors, hair textures, hairstyles, and fashions. This coloring collection reflects some of that variety through classic looks, natural curls, fashion scenes, fantasy designs, and different careers.

Does this collection include a mermaid Barbie?

Yes. The collection includes a Mermaid Princess Barbie sitting on a rock with a flowing mermaid tail and fish nearby.

Is there a Barbie and Ken coloring page?

Yes. There is a Barbie and Ken page, plus separate pages with Barbie and her sisters Chelsea and Skipper, and another scene featuring Barbie with friends.

Does the collection include Black Barbie?

Yes. One page features Black Barbie with Curly Hair, with full natural curls and a fashion-focused outfit.

Which Barbie coloring pages are easiest for younger kids?

Start with the Easy Barbie Portrait for Kids, which uses broad facial features, clean outlines, and large open coloring areas. The simpler everyday Barbie designs are also good choices for younger colorists who want less detail than the fashion, mandala, or Dreamhouse scenes.
