WHO IS RAPUNZEL
Rapunzel is the princess at the center of Disney’s Tangled, released in 2010 — the story of a girl with seventy feet of magical hair who spent eighteen years locked in a tower before finally seeing the floating lanterns she’d watched from her window every birthday. Created by directors Nathan Greno and Byron Howard, Tangled became one of Disney’s most beloved modern films and introduced one of the studio’s most distinctive heroines: curious, artistic, armed with a frying pan, and accompanied by a chameleon named Pascal.
What made Rapunzel connect with audiences wasn’t just the hair — it was the combination of genuine warmth, quick wit, and a determination to experience the world she’d only read about in books. The lantern scene remains one of the most visually striking moments in Disney animation history, and Rapunzel’s story of finding freedom, identity, and belonging on her own terms has made her one of the most searched Disney princess coloring characters online.
How to Color Rapunzel
Rapunzel’s defining feature is obviously her hair — seventy feet of golden blonde that fills every page it appears on. The hair is warm golden-yellow rather than pale blonde, and the most successful approach is to use two or three shades: a light golden-yellow as the base, a slightly deeper warm gold for the deeper sections, and leaving the highlights near-white. The hair is so present on most pages that how you handle it determines the whole mood of the finished piece.
Her dress in the classic Tangled look is that specific lavender-purple with a pink and white bodice — a surprisingly complex palette for a princess outfit. The purple sections work best in a true medium purple rather than going too blue or too pink. The white and pink bodice details are worth taking time over because they add a lot of warmth to the overall page.
Pascal is a chameleon — his default coloring in the film is green, but he changes throughout. On coloring pages he’s most often shown in his natural green, which ranges from bright lime green on his back to a slightly warmer yellow-green on his belly. His large eyes are his most expressive feature, and leaving the highlight spot white gives him real life on the page.
Flynn Rider’s outfit is brown leather with a white shirt — earthy, warm tones throughout. His dark brown hair reads well against Rapunzel’s golden blonde in duo pages. The satchel he’s always carrying is tan leather with darker brown strap details.
The tower is the most architecturally complex element in the collection. Stone gray for the exterior walls with slightly darker gray in the joints between stones, a wooden door in warm brown, and green ivy climbing the walls. The single window at the top — where the hair hangs — is best left with very pale yellow suggesting light from inside.
The lantern scene pages are the most rewarding in the set to color. The lanterns themselves work best in warm golden-yellow and amber, and if you have a gold gel pen this is exactly the right page to use it. The water reflections below the boat can be handled with very light blue pencil strokes following the horizontal direction of the water.
For the sun mandala, work from the center outward. The central sun symbol looks best in deep golden-yellow, with the surrounding petals and geometric elements in alternating warm tones. These pages reward two to three hours of careful work with fine-tip colored pencils.
Baby Rapunzel pages have the largest open areas in the set — perfect for chunky crayons and confident fills without worrying about detail.
What to Do with Finished Rapunzel Coloring Pages
Recreate the Lantern Scene as a Mobile
Print the lantern boat page and three or four individual lantern outlines. Color them all with warm gold and amber tones, cut out the lanterns, punch a hole in each, and hang them from a thin wooden dowel with thread at different heights. The boat page goes on the wall beneath it. This takes about an afternoon and produces the kind of display that actually looks designed.
Turn the Tower Artwork Page into a Classroom Activity
The tower walls page — where Rapunzel’s murals cover every surface — works brilliantly as a creative writing prompt. Color the page, then ask kids to write what each painting in the tower means to Rapunzel, or what she would paint if she had one more year in the tower. It’s a literacy and empathy activity wrapped inside a coloring project.
Make a Rapunzel Birthday Banner
Print the crown and royal gown page, the lantern page, and the dancing outside page in sequence. Color them, cut them out, punch holes in the top corners, and thread ribbon through. Hang across a table or doorway for a Tangled birthday party. These three pages tell the whole story in one banner — tower, lanterns, freedom.
Use the Sun Mandala as a Framed Gift
Print the sun mandala on cardstock. Spend a proper session with fine-tip colored pencils — warm golds and ambers for the sun sections, soft greens and purples for the outer ring. Frame it in a simple wooden frame. It genuinely looks like purchased art rather than a printable, and it’s the kind of finished piece that gets hung on walls rather than put in a folder.
Build a Pascal Emotions Activity
Print the three Pascal pages — reading together, Pascal on her head, and face to face. Color each one, then have kids write a speech bubble for Pascal on each page. Since Pascal never speaks, kids have to interpret his expression — which is a genuine empathy and observation exercise. The three pages together show his full personality range in a way that works perfectly for a classroom display.
Create a Before and After Story Strip
Print the sleeping baby Rapunzel page, the tower painting page, and the palace rooftop celebration page. Color them, add a date or caption to each, and present them as a three-panel story: where she started, what she did with eighteen years, and where she ended up. Simple, visual, and tells the whole arc of Tangled in three images.
